***+ Chez Ray Syrah, Stage Gulch Vineyard, Sonoma, CA, 2005 (S'5 - S Prime 5)

Original Review,  January, 2011, over five years from vintage date:

By way of background: This is the Chez Ray wine labeled S'5 (S Prime 5), which I believe to be 2005 Stage Gulch Vineyard Syrah, Sonoma County, CA (SG5, code #96)  (The uncertainty is that I did not record an S'5 labeling - I expected that Stage Gulch would be SG5.  However, in the wine cellar, I see no SG5's only S'5's!).  From our original tasting in 2006, we reported: " smoke, roast meat, oak, round (**), light, burnt toast (84), red raspberry, meat, lo/mid tannin, mid fruit, mid acid, mid alcohol."

In the glass: This syrah shows magenta in the glass, purple and brick at the edge. (The photograph appears more brick than reality.)

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Sonoma syrah shows complex aromas that still show an intense sweet beef blood mixed with some overripe blackberry.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are an intense, slick and thick dark fruit in the middle, sliding to a thick mineral coating in your cheeks.  A bit of acids lift the finish from its dark depths.

In summary: Overall, a rich, deep experience, rating three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its definite concentration.

Updated review, over two and a half years later, now eight years from vintage date, October, 2013:  Deep magenta, no purple at the edge any longer.  Consistent nose.  The palate remains thick and bold.   Very solid!

  1. Hi Ray,

Just wanted to let you know that I sipped your Chez Ray 2005 Sauternes over the last two evenings, and found it quite good! Honey & pear flavors, with a satisfying, medium finish.
